Environmental Update

Canon Patrick writes…

Since 2012, I have had a diocesan role as Bishop’s Adviser for the Environment.  In this capacity I recently attended the CofE’s national conference on the Environment.  Most dioceses had at least two representatives, so there were over 100 people present.

As we think about the global environmental situation, there is plenty to get depressed about.  President Trump believes climate change is “the greatest con job ever”.  He is hugely influential and the political consensus about addressing environmental problems has now broken down.  Also, with so many wars going on, it is very difficult to build the global cooperation needed to address environmental issues.   The warnings from scientists about environmental dangers are stronger than ever, but the political will to address them seems lacking.

On the other hand, there are great signs of hope.  The cost and security benefits of renewal electricity from solar and wind are now widely recognised and the UK government appears to be addressing the challenges this raises for our national electricity infrastructure.   Young people remain deeply concerned about the environmental agenda.  China has set itself meaningful climate reduction targets.  Even India is showing signs of wanting to reduce its dependence on coal.

In the church we recognise an environmental hope that goes beyond the current problems, just as Christ’s resurrection goes beyond the problems that led to his death.  In the CofE a huge amount of work has taken place on the “net zero by 2030” agenda. This now has huge momentum, even if it has become clear that a more nuanced set of metrics and targets will be required.  There is also increasing focus on preserving biodiversity habitats.

Let’s pray for peace and unity, so the world can find the focus it needs to address environmental challenges.

With prayers and best wishes, Canon Patrick

Collect Prayer for the third Sunday of Trinity

Almighty God, you have broken the tyranny of sin and have sent the Spirit of your Son into our hearts whereby we call you Father: give us grace to dedicate our freedom to your service, that we and all creation may be brought to the glorious liberty of the children of God; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen.
