Each summer groups of children with several staff and volunteers walk from the school on Station Lane up to visit St Mary’s Church and the Old School. They follow in the steps of pilgrims walking to a holy place, and also of generations of school children who walked (and later bussed) their way from the Kingswood part of Lapworth near the station to the Old School by the Church.
En route the children learn about the railway, the old mill and the canals. They walk through the cricket ground and past the site of the 1907 ice tragedy. Finally they arrive at the Old School next to the Church, where they have a break for lunch and a play. After lunch the children talk to a former pupil from the school. One lady they met started as an infant at Lapworth School more than 80 years ago! The children hear about the classrooms, the fires for heating, the school milk, the Headteachers and the cane!
Next we move into St Mary’s Church with prayers and an exploration of the church building through a quiz. There is a visit to the churchyard and sometimes a demonstration of the organ. The day finishes with a short service in Church on the theme of Pilgrimage. The children return to school by bus.
