This year 8th May was designated as a Bank Holiday to mark the 75th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day. I cycled through Henley-in-Arden where lots of socially distanced street parties were happening; each household in their own front garden, often with drinks and a barbeque. I have received pictures of similar events on Station Lane, Lapworth.
I was interested in what the Queen said in her broadcast. Referring to the darkest days of the war, she said, “But we kept faith that the cause was right, and this belief… carried us through. Never give up, never despair – that was the message of VE Day.” She made links to the current COVID-19 crisis, noting that our willingness to protect and support one another would be recognised and admired by those who fought in the war.
